the story of my roomies

image

This is simply for my writing pleasure and for me to look back on and reminisce.

I first met Aubrey. We quickly became great friends at Yule her freshman year, my sophomore year. We slightly kept in touch after that but fully reconnected when I transferred to CBU as a junior. I was on her bus on the way up to new student retreat and we chatted for hours. I fell in love with her all over again always leaving from hanging out with her with a permanent smile on my face. This one time for clash n’ bowl she made a huge mohawk out of her hair and it was then I realized that she needed to be my best friend.  Adventures always happen with this girl which I thrive on. I found someone to keep up with my spontaneity! She is truly a beautiful woman of God and I know she’ll be in my life forever. I love you Aubs!

The second roommate I met was Kayla. Since we were both transfers to CBU we were put in the only transfer apt in UP. I remember emailing each other over the summer deciphering how the décor was going to play out. I specifically remember her telling me she loved mustard yellow and owls. The first night she moved in she told me basically who she was and her story. I appreciated her openness so much and admired her for the things she’s experienced and has grown from. I had the pleasure of living with her for a second year in a row which has been a tremendous blessing. She’s a master at her graphic designing talents and I couldn’t be more proud! She’s such a strong and independent woman and I just love being around her. We’re graduating on Saturday morning and we’re moving into a new apt in Riverside together. A new chapter that we get to experience together! I love you Kay!

The third roomie I was lucky enough to meet was dear sweet Ashley. We met each other when a large CBU group went to Disneyland. I remember walking around the park and this girl was stating all these Disney facts which usually was me! So I turned around and started giving it right back to her with the “did you know…. And did you know…” And guess what, she did know. From then it became love. Ashley has such a beautiful heart and is a girl that can really challenge those around her. I recall countless times when I would go to her with questions about the Bible, verses, or certain stories. She would stay up for hours just talking with me about it. I remember this one time we had a 2 hour conversation on the book of Revelation in the wee hours of the night… it rocked my world. Ashley is just that girl that you love being around not only for the entertainment factor but because she just makes you smile plain and simple. She has the sweetest demeanor and is so encouraging. I love you Ash!

The final roomie I met was Gabby.  I had met her last summer when her, Ashley, and I went to see Star Trek. Originally she wasn’t even signed up to live with us; Erin Zurn was. But because of EZ’s exciting engagement that left a spot open in UP219 just for Gabby! Gabby and I bonded at a speeding rate because she loved to sing which is a passion of mine as well. I remember seeing her guitar for the first and getting giddy. I asked her to play and without hesitation she picked it up and played/sang “Kiss me.” Her playing was just so beautiful so I expressed to her how I wanted to learn. She sat with me and taught me the major chords. My first song I learned was “As the Deer.” We would sing it over and over again together until I got it right. Gabby is a girl that is bizarre in every way and I just love being around her goofiness. I can’t even count all the ridiculous improv videos we have made on her Mac book. Her personality is contagious and I’m so happy the rooming situation worked out the way it did. I made a lifelong friendship/bond with her… I’m so lucky! I love you Gabbs!

Roommates

ashleyconnor:

In reference to myself Gabby and Aubrey living in a 3 person UP next year and Kayla and Kylie graduating and living together in an off campus apartment…

Gabby: It’s so sad that were just splitting right down the middle

Kylie: It feels like were getting a divorce

Gabby: Yeah! It’s like Kylie and Aubrey are getting a divorce. Aubrey gets the kids.

Ashley: And Kylie gets the Kayla

I’m sad. Ill get over it sooner or later but right now I’m sad. I hate seeing bare walls… memories taken down.. our cluttered apartment becoming clean. Slow down life.

Kylie is a funny one.

grantgergins:

Kayla: “Ok Kylie, so with this one we get CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, CW, HSN……”

Interrupting Kylie: “NO DISNEY!?!?!?”

Kayla: (blank stare back at ky)

oh yah… I meant it too.

cbu student leadership

Prepare yourself… it’s a lengthy one.

Tonight was the student leadership end of the year dinner. As I was sitting there surrounded by Brandon, Aubrey, Matt H., Mark, Aaron, and Tommy, I realized what being apart leadership at CBU has done in my life. I came to CBU as a junior only knowing a few people. It was the 3rd time I was the new kid in town. I was blessed with an amazing FOCUS leader, Keegan. Through the orientation program that was put on I was able to build an amazing friendship with him and after two rad birthdays celebrated together, I’m honored to call him one of my very best friends I’ve ever had.

When times were tough, those friends that I made the first week of school were right there when I needed them the most. When God closes a door He opens a window. In this case, He opened up a bunch of windows and I started making deep unconditional bonds with those around me.

It was around February of last year when I felt God calling me to give more of myself. It was then that I decided to apply for FOCUS. I wanted to be a transfer leader because not only have I had a lot of practice in doing so, but I know how it feels to be the new kid. I remember the times during previous orientations standing strong and independent yet feeling incredibly anxious inside. I wanted to be that leader that invested time into her students. I wanted them to know that they always had a friend in me and that they could rely on me for anything and everything. I’m overjoyed that I can say today I was able to be that person. Through this experience not only was I able to pour my heart into my girls lives but I was able to learn from them as well. God has given me with so many incredible relationships these past two years.

Being a part of leadership truly was the most incredible experience and I’m so stoked on what God has been doing in my life.  He is my rock and I so look forward to seeing what he will do through me this upcoming year while I’m in grad school. One chapter closes and another opens. Here’s to that new upcoming chapter.

Brandon's take on how to land a job
  • Me: Guys, I need a title for my resume
  • Brandon: Possimpible; making up words shows creativity. It means possible and impossible at the same time
  • Me: That's why you don't have a job Brandon

i need to master the art of direction

Today, when I was driving back to CBU from Ontario Mills I was stopped at a stop light/train crossing. Behold, a train that (I kid you not) had well over 300 cars that was passing through at about 7 mph. A bunch of cars turned around to get on the 10 frwy but me, not being direction savvy, waited because I didn’t know how to get back to school using that thing. So I proceeded to wait about 20 minutes until the (d word) “K SWISS” trains finished their crossing. I learned patience today… well for about 5 minutes I did… and then my smile faded away.

another earthquake story

So, you know how when you’re in a movie theater and the guy with the low voice says “In case of an emergency please walk, DON’T run to the nearest exit?” Well when he said that, I thought to myself HAH a) everyone would run and b) you never have a need for these instructions because nothing ever happens in a movie. Well shame on me.

Half way through our movie, BOOM! Earthquake hits. At first I thought it was my mom shaking her foot on the seat in front of us but I soon realized that it wasn’t. I glanced at all the panicked people in the theater and then shot a look at my dad. My dad stands up quickly and everyone starts to do the same frantically, screaming and RUNNING, not walking to the exit. It was like we were literally in a movie.

Most of the people left the movie theater to probably go home and watch the news. Does my family do the same? No.. paying $10 a person we went back in to get our moneys worth haha (oh my family)
